Sandalwood Tree – The Golden Tree of Vanuatu.

Vanuatu Sandalwood is Santalum austrocaledonicum and is the second to the world standard.

At the age of 15 years one Sandalwood tree produces great 30 kilograms heartwood of great oil quality content

Minimum price per kilo of Sandalwood heartwood is 2,000 vatu and this price can even reach 7,000vt depending on quality of log and product aiming at such as Carving Log

Sandalwood is easily grown from; Seeds, Wildings and Seedlings

Seeds are collected throughout the year – Climate Change advantage

Seeds of Sandalwood are also naturally distributed by most Tree Doves and most common the Green tree Dove – Avoid killing the Green Tree Dove as it is also helping to grow your trees in your land

Sandalwood Seed Orchards and Mother Trees are now grown throughout the habitat islands in Vanuatu

You can collect your seeds from these sources or go where the Green Tree Dove sits and rests and sure you will find your golden tree growing.


Nangai Nut Tree – Tree of Live for Vanuatu.

There are two species of Nangai in Vanuatu, Canarium Indicum and Canarium Harveii

Nangai nut or Canarium nut is the best sources of protein and vitamins in the nuts

Nangai is a multipurpose tree species for timber and the nuts and medicinal purpose

Nangai nut will be a REDD+ program Reforestation tree species

There is a Nut processing industry call the Lapita Café in Port Vila

The Government through the Department of Forestry and Trades are researching into supporting the Nangai nut industry and will be supporting the processing into the future

Nangai trees can be grown from; Seeds, Wildings and Seedlings

Nangai is distributed throughout the Northern and Central part of Vanuatu naturally and has already being introduced to the Southern region

Nangai nut is a great food product that can be used to be cooked in expensive cuisines

Demand for Canarium nut or Nangai nut is in great demand

The medicinal value of Nangai traditionally is now proven by modern medicine all over to be a great cure for different illness

Nangai oil has a great level of the Omega oil only found in fish oil a highly nutritive oil

The Nangai Nut is a medicine plant for the family around the back yard.


Whitewood Tree – Miracle Tree of Vanuatu.

There is one species of Whitewood in Vanuatu, Endospermum medullosum

Whitewood is a great tree species for a white timber, the timber is the best for wood working, can be easily; seasoned or treated, sawn, nailing, screwed and change coloring

Whitewood grows much easily and in our weather and soil it grows happy and healthy

Naturally Whitewood is adapted to cyclone or is wind firm

Whitewood can be easily grown in Agro-forestry farming systems

Whitewood occurs naturally throughout Vanuatu as far south to Erromango Island

Department of forests has promoted Whitewood and deploy planting materials to as many habitat islands of Vanuatu

Whitewood grows at a height of roughly one to two meters per year with a great mean annual increment

Whitewood trees can be harvested as early as ten (10yrs) years and older.


Mahogany Tree – Samaritan Tree.

Mahogany Switenia macrophyllia is an exotic tree species introduced by the Presbyterian Church missionaries in the early 70s.

Mahogany tree is a high value hard wood timber with a high demand and well known in the World Market of Timber

One of the hard wood tree species that can be easily grown and grows fast in Vanuatu is Mahogany

Mahogany is available throughout Vanuatu in all forestry stations; Sola, Leion Bay, Gaua, Apatuntora, Saratamata, Shaupi, Lakatoro, Tagabe, Isangel, Ipota, Analgohat.

Mahogany is easily grown from; Seeds, Wildings and Seedlings

Seeds are collected in the month of July

Wildings are the best source of planting materials and handling is easy and can be stored in water or soil for over three months period before planting

Seedlings are easily prepared in the nursery and are ready to plant after a three months period

The estimated price of hard wood timber including that of Mahogany timber is reaching 70,000 to 100,000 plus Vatu per cubic meter

A good growing tree at age twenty years (20yrs) will fetch you around this figure and a hectare of the tree species will be a great asset to the family, community, province or nation.
